Throughout 2023, we made significant strides towards our mission to build a more inclusive and equitable global AI ecosystem by levelling the playing field for African data science talent. As we step into the new year, we take this opportunity to reflect on the collective impact you’ve helped us to achieve.
- In 2023, we welcomed 24 data scientists from 5 African countries into our programme. Supported by experienced mentors from leading companies, our data scientists worked on cutting-edge AI and data projects in healthcare, industrial engineering, environmental sustainability, and agriculture.
- We organised our inaugural #AfricaBuildsAI hackathon, fostering collaboration between African data science talent and visionary organisations. With representation from over 11 countries, this event showcased the potential of AI in addressing real-world business challenges. 13 talented African data scientists, mentored by 10 professionals, collaborated on diverse challenges presented by six organisations: Na’amal, Bboxx, Lady Agri, Rewion, Dance, and Boreal Bikes. - We partnered with DataCamp to further our mission of fostering data science talent in Africa. DataCamp provided 100 scholarships to Ishango.ai learners, enhancing skill development and access to quality learning resources. We also conducted five DataCamp-Ishango.ai community events, providing learners with opportunities to present topics, share progress, interact with other learners, discuss challenges, and showcase success stories within the data science field.
- Our journey at Ishango.ai gained recognition through an interview with Data.org, where we discussed leveraging remote work to empower African data scientists, further amplifying our reach and impact. Read more
