2. Tell us about your path into data science. What inspired you to pursue a career in the field? Is this what you’ve always wanted to do?
During my school days, I discovered a subject that intrigued me: “Databases.” Its simplicity and ease of understanding captivated me amidst a plethora of other subjects. As time passed, my fondness for it only grew stronger.
Despite my passion for databases, I hesitated to fully commit to a career solely focused on them. Instead, I explored various job roles, searching for fulfilment across different fields. This journey led me through diverse experiences until I chanced upon an opportunity at a credit reference bureau.
Here, I found myself immersed in the meticulous task of data cleaning. Working with what some might label as “dirty” data, I painstakingly organised it for reference purposes. Though unexpected, this experience served as a pivotal moment, guiding me towards a career path centred around data science.
3. What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced on your career journey, and how have you overcome them?
As a mother, one of the toughest aspects of my life was balancing the demands of my family with my career. Juggling both often left me feeling torn between two priorities. To address this challenge, I decided to enhance my efficiency at work. I meticulously managed my time, prioritising essential tasks to ensure I could devote more time to my family. This strategy allowed me to feel accomplished both in my professional and personal lives.
Furthermore, staying abreast of technological advancements posed another significant hurdle, especially in the rapidly evolving field of data science. To cope, I committed myself to continuous learning. Every week, I dedicated time to stay updated on industry trends and participated in training sessions. Additionally, I sought guidance from colleagues who possessed expertise in certain technologies, enabling me to expand my knowledge base. This commitment to learning enabled me to remain relevant in my field and foster professional growth.
By prioritizing personal and professional development and embracing change, I overcame these obstacles. Each challenge became an opportunity for learning and advancement, propelling me forward in my career while maintaining fulfillment in my personal life.
4. What advice would you give to those who are just starting in AI and data science? What skills or qualities do you think are most important for success in this field?
To excel in your career, it’s crucial to acquire a comprehensive skill set encompassing technical proficiency, collaborative abilities, and problem-solving aptitude. Additionally, gaining a deep understanding of your company’s operations is essential for identifying tailored solutions to its challenges.
