FAQs

A recent graduate with a degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics and Statistics. Applicants with any degree who can demonstrate at least 2 years of relevant work experience and have successfully completed online courses in data science can join. If you don’t have any technical background or training in data science, sadly, you can not take part in the programme.
Complete and submit the online application form. If selected, you will be invited to complete an online technical assessment. Upon successful completion of the online assessment, you will be invited for a technical interview. If your interview is successful, you will receive a conditional offer pending approval by a host company. Once the host company has reviewed your profile and is happy to have you assigned to their project, you will receive a confirmed offer.
We look for people that have data science and problem-solving skills, a good level of coding, work well as part of a team, and have good time management and planning skills.
The data science programme is fully funded and free for selected participants. In addition, you will receive a stipend to cover your accommodation, meals, local transport and living costs for the duration of the programme.
It is not possible to join the programme part-time, remotely or on flexible hours. It is essential that applicants only accept an offer if they are able to commit to being available full-time for the 8 weeks of programme. You will be required to work in person from the Ishango workspace for the duration of the programme.
Participants will need to fund and make their own travel arrangements to and from the residency in Accra/Kigali.  However, financial support may be provided for exceptional candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Typically your day will start by arriving at the Ishango workspace at the specified start time ( usually 8 am) followed by a morning stand-up meeting to plan the day. You will then spend the day working on your assigned project including having a meeting with your host company (when scheduled). Lunch is then provided after which you will attend an expert session (scheduled weekly). Lastly, you will have an end-of-day reflection meeting at 5 pm. After work you are free and sometimes we plan some activities for you to take part in.
The programme is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your skills and impress your host company. If a host company is happy with your performance they may offer you a contract to continue working with them. We will also provide you with further support and exposure to help you with your job search.
Projects will be all data-based. Each host company proposes a project and you will have to find a solution for it in your team of two. The projects vary considerably depending on the host company, however they all require strong data engineering and data science skills. Tools and skills often required are: machine learning; NLP; working with DBs; Python; VS Code Studio; git.

All kinds of companies from all over the world. Most of them are data science-guided, and others are just companies which have proposed data projects with which they need help.
