Host Company Spotlight – Barry Callebaut

Barry Callebaut Group

Introducing Barry Callebaut as a Data Science Project Partner.

At Ishango.ai one of the main goals is to create value for global businesses by giving them access to top data science talent in Africa.

Through our Data Science Fellowship, we have had the pleasure of working with leading companies on data-driven projects that have supported key decisions and delivered real business value to their operations. In November 2022, we are happy to welcome Barry Callebaut as a new host company.

Barry Callebaut Group is the world’s leading manufacturer of high-quality chocolate and cocoa products, mastering every step in the value chain from the sourcing of raw materials to the production of the finest chocolates. With more than 175 years of chocolate heritage, the Barry Callebaut Group has an unparalleled blend of expertise in cocoa and chocolate.

As part of our fellowship programme, Barry Callebaut is hosting two fellows, Opanin Adu Agyei and Samuel Gyimah, both from Ghana.

Opanin Adu Agyei has an MPhil in Applied Mathematics and a Bsc. in Statistics. He is interested in research that applies deep learning techniques to solve real-life problems.

Samuel Gyimah has a BSc in Mechanical Engineering and experience working in the drone Industry. His interests lie in sentiment analysis and using Deep Learning in NLP

For the 8-week duration of the fellowship, Opanin and Samuel have been assigned the project to identify inefficiencies in production lines and extract actionable insights from the data provided.

On their expectations for the fellowship, the fellows had this to say:

I think this is a relevant learning experience for me, as I get to apply mathematical concepts in the field of engineering. This will definitely help my course as a versatile data scientist who can easily adapt to any field that requires the application of mathematical concepts.

Opanin Adu Agyei

Ishango is very excited to partner with Barry Callebaut as a host company for our fellowship. We are grateful for this opportunity for our fellows to develop and showcase their skills. It will go a long way in not only boosting their career prospects but also shaping them into problem solvers that can create real impact across the African continent.
