Data Analyst Spotlight: Emmanuel Kanati

1. Please introduce yourself, what you do, and your current role.

My name is Emmanuel Mawuli Kanati, and I work as a data analyst in the UK. I am currently employed at Bike Assist Legal, a top British law firm specialising in motorcyclist representation. My role involves using data and predictive analytics to provide insights that help with strategic decisions and improve the firm’s efficiency.

2. Tell us about your path into data science. What inspired you to pursue a career in the field? Is this what you’ve always wanted to do? 

My journey into data science started after my bachelor’s degree in Ghana, where I became proficient in Microsoft Excel. To enhance my skills, I learnt how to use SQL and Power BI and attended a data science boot camp. My roles as a BI manager and insight manager focused on predictive analytics, which deepened my interest. I then pursued an MSc in data science and AI, focusing on machine learning and deep learning projects. Although my undergraduate studies were in political science and French, I found my true passion in data science.

3. What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced on your career journey, and how have you overcome them?

A major challenge I’ve faced is analysis paralysis when dealing with complex problems or large datasets. I overcame this by using a structured problem-solving approach, breaking tasks into manageable steps, and using agile methodologies to track progress. Experimenting and learning from both successes and failures helped me make incremental progress.

4. What advice would you give to those who are just starting in AI and data science? What skills or qualities do you think are most important for success in this field?

To excel in the dynamic field of data science, aspiring professionals should first establish a strong technical foundation by mastering fundamentals such as SQL, mathematics, statistics, and programming languages like Python. Alongside technical skills, effective communication and collaboration skills are essential for working in multidisciplinary teams and conveying insights to stakeholders. Also, adaptability and a commitment to continuous learning are paramount, as the field evolves rapidly with new tools and techniques constantly emerging. Finally, seeking mentorship and engaging with supportive communities further enriches the learning journey, providing invaluable guidance and opportunities for collaboration and growth.
