About

The Ishango Data Science Fellowship is a fully funded, 2 month programme aimed at supporting African graduates to kickstart a career in data science. We take top graduates from across Africa and give them practical skills and real-world project experience in data science, AI, and machine learning. During the residency at one of our locations in Ghana or Rwanda, fellows will develop their skills by working remotely on value-adding projects for global companies.

The Role

The goal of the Data Science Mentor in Residence is to ensure fellows are supported as they work on delivering projects for host companies. You will be based in one of our residential locations for 2 months – Ghana (May to July 2022) or Rwanda ( September to November 2022), working alongside our fellows.Read this blog by our 2021 Data Scientist in Residence about his experience

Responsibilities

  • Project supervision – Provide technical guidance and oversight to ensure that fellows deliver work to a high standard. Point them towards the right resources and tools. Provide feedback on outputs before they are presented to clients. Track fellows’ progress and highlight to theIshango team when fellows are doing well or maybe falling behind.
  • Programme development – Be a key thought partner in the development of the fellowship programme. Work with theIshango team to identify any gaps in fellows’ skills or the support provided that may affect their ability to successfully deliver projects. Provide recommendations and work with the team to design appropriate tools, content and resources to address these gaps.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in the data science landscape (Data analyst, Data engineer, Machine learning engineer, Research Scientist) at a reputable corporate or startup.
  • Passionate about supporting the development of new and diverse talent in data science.
  • Experience working with people of diverse professional and life backgrounds. Able to give constructive, positive feedback.
  • Highly organized and able to develop systems to keep track of the progress of fellows and projects.
  • A good communicator and strategic thinker. Able to provide feedback and recommendations to improve the fellowship programme as a whole.
